The volunteer member is a cornerstone of the rich history of the fire service. Clackamas Fire District #1 has relied on volunteers working side by side with career personnel in the daily performance of the fire district’s mission.

Today, more than ever, the district’s board of directors is committed to supporting the volunteer program.

The Clackamas Fire District #1 Volunteer Services Program has recently gone through many changes to create opportunities for volunteers to specialize in their service and to implement a program to compensate those individuals for their commitment.

Compensation "Accountable Plan"
The Clackamas Fire District #1 Volunteer Services Program has recently implemented a program called the “Accountable Plan” to compensate volunteers for their service. Clackamas Fire District #1 Volunteers now receive monthly mileage reimbursement for their district related travel, have funds placed into a 401K style retirement account (called LOSAP), and receive reimbursement for tuition and other educational expenses. The monthly mileage is paid at the current IRS approved rate per mile. The total LOSAP contribution that each volunteer can receive is $3,000 per calendar year, and the total amount that each volunteer can receive per year in tuition and educational expense reimbursement is $5,250 per year. These positive changes are helping the Clackamas Fire District #1 Volunteer Services Program comply with the new IRS compensation guidelines and are encouraging member activity and supporting our mission objectives.

Programs
With the new Volunteer Services program changes, we currently have volunteers in six specialized service categories consisting of Auxiliary, Chaplains, Explorers, Rehab/Command Bus Operators, Water Tender Operators and Firefighter Volunteers.

Support Volunteers
Support Volunteers play a critical role in providing service to the community. They provide the necessary support to meet the district's mission by engaging in a variety of functions and roles including rehabilitation response and support, water tender response, command bus response, Chaplain duties and auxiliary functions.

Suppression Volunteers
Suppression Volunteers are trained and equipped to respond to emergency scenes and perform firefighting and other emergency response activities. They regularly participate in fighting fires, providing emergency medical care and in fire prevention activities. This practical experience is priceless in developing the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the fire service.

Application Process
Clackamas Fire District #1 accepts Volunteer Applications throughout the year for all of the volunteer specialized services. The application cut off date is August 15th of every year for consideration to attend the annual support academy that begins January 1st of every year. Volunteer applicants for all of the specialized service categories, with the exception of Chaplains and Explorers, are required to attend and complete the January Rehab/Support Academy before graduating and advancing to any of the specialized service categories. Once an application is received, all applicants will be notified by U.S. Mail and advised of the processing timelines.
